Nikon vs. Canon- a Tug of War at my Oklahoma Workshop!

www.funphotoworkshops.com

Well, it's an age old debate...well I guess it has been over the past couple decades at least...  But Nikon vs. Canon always comes out at my workshops so we decided to carry that theme through with our group shot!  I told the gals not to pull to hard on the cables as to not cause the whole thing to come crashing down on my head...they didn't listen too well...

Obviously you can see my hand is more emphatic against Canon, but I still love my Canon friends..:)

ThinkTank Bags Gear Review Podcast- What happened when I needed them most...

http://photographerpodcast.com/2013/05/08/thinktank-bags-why-their-bags-and-customer-service-are-the-best-in-the-world/

This is my first podcast regarding camera bags, and in particular ThinkTank bags which I own and use exclusively. This is a mix between a review of their bags, but more than a gear review it shares my story of what happened when TSA broke the handle on my bag and the desperation I felt because I need my bags and can't have any down time. I expected to get the run around from ThinkTank and a bunch of excuses.

Well, when I called them they OWNED the problem and overnighted me handles at no expense to my hotel in Oklahoma where I'm teaching a workshop. AWESOME customer service, AWESOME bags, just LOVE THESE GUYS!!!

Podcast- How Photographers can stay OUT of trouble with the Police

http://photographerpodcast.com/2013/05/07/how-photographers-can-stay-out-of-trouble-with-the-police/

Click on the link above to hear Jason's podcast on how photographers can stay out of trouble with the police...

Jason Lanier has a long history like many world traveled photographers of running afoul of the law throughout his travels around the world. Photographers have a long history of butting heads with police officers, park rangers, and more. This list does not endorse breaking any laws, it's simply meant as a guideline for dealing with the law when it becomes unavoidable. So here's the list of staying out of trouble and working yourself out of hairy situations...

This is a shot provided to me by my assistant Joyce from the Everglades.  You'll see my alligator buddy off in the distance in one of the moments where he wasn't very close compared to other times.  As you can tell by the sweat on my face it was pretty humid!  Thanks Joyce!

Should Established Photographers Help New Photographers to Learn?

http://photographerpodcast.com/2013/05/04/helping-photographers-to-learn/

In this episode which is an excerpt from a conversation held at my Miami workshop while we were driving to various shoot locations, we discussed the topic of whether or not established photographers should help newer photographers to learn.

Topics include why established photographers are hard on new photographers, how to find a photographer mentor, finding photography workshops that actually help you learn, and more.  Also includes discussion on how Jason Lanier learned including what workshops he attended, 1 community college photography class that he took 20 years ago, and who he looks up to in the industry.

Jason Lanier gives advice on how you can self critique, his opinions on people coming onto social media websites like Facebook and bashing your work, and who you should be seeking out for professional critiques.  Jason shares his thoughts on blocking out those who’s opinions aren’t really beneficial to you and your work.   The conversation ends with Jason sharing how he had to improve his wardrobe when doing workshops since so many production images started coming out of him all over the place.  Hope you enjoy!

Didn't your Momma ever tell you to not play with alligators?

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This awesome shot was provided by my workshop attendee and friend Dwight Paredes aka "Barbara Walters" of me playing a little with the alligators in the Everglades.  This guy actually got much closer than this and definitely had his eye on me as we played some cat and mouse for about 30 minutes.  Truly an awesome time!  Thanks Dwight for such a great capture!!

HEY! Quick Trying to Push me in the Alligator infested waters!!

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This production image was taken at my Miami Workshop when we visited the Everglades.  There were alligators in the water and my student Dwight decided it would be hilarious to test my balance to see if he could gently nudge me into the water.  Luckily my balance is halfway decent thanks to Karate.  It's good to know he thought my demise was so hilarious.  This is what Dwight had to say about the workshop.

"Awesome workshop with awesome people and awesome Teacher.  The things I learned definely will improve my skills as a Photographer. "- Dwight Paredes

Tempting the Gators in the Everglades

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This image was taken by Huguette Stachewitsch at my worskhop this past Wednesday while we were in the Everglades for my workshop.  We went down this dirt road and found this gorgeous body of water and set up for some shots.  The gators started coming out and one in particular was very keen on me...of course that could have been because I was pretty keen on him as well.

Everytime I spoke some Spanish to the Gator he would gain more interest in me....who knows maybe he's a Cuban gator.  I have video and more pics to share from this experience but it was a first at one of my workshops...having fun with alligators!!

Miami Workshop at the Miami Marine Stadium

www.funphotoworkshops.com

This was such an AMAZING place to shoot!  The Miami Marine Stadium is a historic and now abandoned structure in Key Biscayne that has held presidential campaign speeches all the way to concerts and major sporting events.  It was hurt by Hurricane Andrew and hasn't opened up since.  We went in there and had an amazing shoot...and then got chased out by the cops.

For this shot I used off camera flash triggered by my Pocket Wizards to add the needed fill light on the model.  Just had a great time and it was great to find a place like this one.  Thanks to everyone who came!

Camera settings: Nikon D800, 1/250 sec at f/4.0, 16mm at ISO 50, flash fired.  Taken at 5:24pm on April 30, 2013 by Jason Lanier.
