Getting Lost in the Unknown....as someone who regularly finds himself in abandoned places...the kinds of places that might frighten others, might give you pause to enter, might just be a complete NO for you....I've found that some of my most peaceful, cathartic and insightful moments have come when I am in these places.

I'm not walking in with blinders on or rose colored glasses. I know there's an inherent danger in visiting these places. Whether it's from the dilapidated buildings, the decaying floors, the sometimes odious smells, or the encounters that I have with other ne'er do wells that I may encounter, these places can be downright creepy.

But I find so much symbolism in them as well. When you see the light that pierces through the holes in the ceiling or the walls, it's such a metaphor for life. I find that instead of my eyes being drawn to the rusted metal or the debris sitting on the ground, my focus is centered around the beauty that is created when a single strand of light dares to enter a place that others find so dark and scary.

The light doesn't give up on the darkness. Instead it shows the old and forgotten beams, pipes and yes the people in these places, the beauty that lies within.

So before you give up on yourself, your family, your friends, or your community, take a step back and let the light come in. You'd be amazed at what you can see in these old places and forgotten people, as well as what you’ll learn about yourself, when you get lost in the unknown.

XOXO
