Face to Face with a Grizzly Family in Haines

Bear Encounter at the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area

Few experiences can compare to the raw power and beauty of nature here in Alaska. On a bear excursion in Haines, I had the unforgettable chance to encounter a mother bear and her four cubs. Watching them play, hunt for salmon, and explore was magical, but then mom decided to walk a little closer than expected.

With my phone in hand, I filmed as I slowly backed away, giving her the space and respect she deserved. It was a reminder that while these moments are thrilling, they’re also humbling—we’re guests in their world. Encounters like this stay with you forever.
