Inauguration Concert

January 19, 2009
by Jason Lanier

Yesterday was a day I'll never forget.  While I focused the majority of the day shooting video, I was able to grab these shots of the Inauguration concert experience.  We took the Metro where even the tickets have Obama's face on them.  It was insane with all the people that were there.

The concert was filled to capacity, so the only place to see anything was at the Washington Monument...and that was packed too.  There were protests where even the staunchest of liberals say Obama isn't tough enough and won't change the war politics of George Bush...and they think Bush is a war criminal.  I've made a point not to voice my political opinions because I find amazement in the whole experience....not in the political beliefs...even though I follow politics very closely.  To think that a black man will stand on the steps of the Capitol and be inaugurated as the President of the United States is amazing.

For those who don't know the layout of the National Mall area....the president looks out past the Washington Monument towards the Lincoln Memorial, and the statue of Lincoln looks back at the President.  To think that over 150 years ago Barack Obama would have been a slave, and now he's President...that is amazing even if you think his ideas are great or if you think they're ridiculous.  I'm not saying everyone needs to be here, or agree with me...but as a photojournalist and history lover...it is amazing to be a witness to all of this.
