Definitely not your normal kind of photography workshop

This is an image of Jesse Deines, a photography student at one of my workshops while we were shooting in the Slot Canyon in the Valley of Fire State Park.  It was a pretty tight squeeze in the canyon, so Jesse decided to be like Spiderman and climb the walls.  This is precisely why I love teaching so much, you get to meet so many people and have so many moments just like this one.

Thanks!

The truth about Jpegs- quality loss EVERY time you save the image

To all those starting out in Photography or maybe you are on the wrong course, PLEASE shoot in Raw if you are being paid to shoot.

Be a responsible professional and give your clients the best possible quality by shooting in Raw.  That way the jpeg images they receive from you will only have been exported from a Raw file so it's only being done once.  Give your clients the best!

From the Adobe Website:

"Save your photos in PSD format (instead of JPEG), unless you plan to share your photos or use them in a web page. Each time you save in JPEG format, the image data is compressed, potentially causing some data to be lost. You may start to notice reduced image quality after saving the file as a JPEG 2‑3 times. The disadvantage of saving in PSD format is that the file size increases significantly because the file is not compressed."

Each time you save a jpeg it loses quality, even after only 2 saves.  You should be working with PSD files in Photoshop or Raw in Lightroom to preserve the image quality.  Hope this helps!

Testimonial from Debbie, a Jason Lanier Photography Workshop Attendee (2 times..going on 3)!

"Jason

I have been looking at picture from before, well you, and can't get over the differences and how annoying it is to have to do more work on the computer for things i am learning to get right with my camera.

It may seem, whatever, but I really do appreciate you. I love it when God puts the people in our lives that can speak to us where we are and help us in spite of ourselves.

Thanks so much for what you do.

Debbie"

I really am grateful that I get paid to do something that I love so much.  I truly love teaching and helping others to pursue their photography dreams....

"Shooting in Raw is only for those who don't know how to shoot." What a load of crap.

As I'm preparing my presentation for my workshop in Morgantown, WV in less than 3 weeks, I'm going through some of my images from the start of my career and was reminded that so many of them are shot in Jpeg, no raws...thanks to the crappy advice of "big name" photographers that I had met at the time.  I actually started shooting in Raw from the start but I was very impressionable at the time.  I was told that it was a waste of time and should ONLY shoot in jpeg.  So I changed for some amount of time and as a result I have a good amount of my early work that's only done in jpeg, which is a shame.

I paid good money to go to workshops only to receive unsound advice.  Keep in mind that this was 2007-2008 when resolution with digital cameras isn't nearly as good as it is today.  I've walked through the Trade Show at major photo conventions and heard speakers say stupid stuff like, "Shooting in Raw is only for those that don't know how to shoot."  I know some of these guys and when I've pressed them privately they've said that they still shoot in Raw but that in "theory" what they're saying is true.  I then tell them that they're, "full of crap."

Why would you purposely shoot in a lower quality?  What good excuse do you have for your clients as to why they are being subjected to an inferior product?  I get so tired of the lame reasons people give for giving people bad advice.  I do believe there are many out there who simply want to mislead those who are beneath them...and that's pretty sad.  At best you could say they are simply uneducated on the topic and misinformed.  If that's the case then they shouldn't give advice as an authority figure in the industry.  I certainly don't know everything, and when I don't know enough about something to give a credible opinion, I keep my mouth shut.

I went to a very well known photographer's workshop about 4 years ago and the Photoshop advice he gave us was complete garbage.  I didn't know it at the time, but as I improved my skills I realized what I had been taught was completely wrong.  And judging by this photogapher's beautiful editing prowess, it was clear that he KNEW the right way to do it, but just didn't want to teach it to any of us.  I don't mind if someone doesn't want to share all their secrets, etc., but if you're going to give advice...make sure it is good!

Wedding Packages based on the Digital Age

Let's face it, we live in a digital age.  It may go against conventional wisdom within the industry but I believe that most clients want digital files, not albums, etc.  For those that still want prints and albums, those options are always available, but from my experience 80% or more of my clients choose NOT to buy albums.  With iPads, iPhones, laptops, Facebook, Blogs, etc. the vast majority of wedding couples want ways to display their images quickly and easily...and that's what my new packages will be all about.

All new wedding photography packages are coming out VERY SOON that include some of the following great details!

  • All Digital Images!
  • Fast Turnaround- get all your image files in less than a month!

Complete details coming VERY SOON!!

Thanks,

Jason

Behind the Scenes shot- using reflectors outdoors

Here is a behind the scenes shot from my workshop last week in Nevada at the Valley of Fire State Park.  One of the great things about this shot is you can see how we used the reflector in a shady environment as it reflected back on the model who is sitting on the rock.  I actually took this image so you obviously don't see me in it, but I always love showing shots like this so you can see what it will be like when you get to join me as well!

Next Workshops:

  • Morgantown, WV- October 22-24
  • Myrtle Beach, SC- November 6-7
  • Tampa, Florida- November 13-14

See you soon!

Helping Brides- Advice from a Professional Photographer

I'm considering a new idea of offering a FREE bi-weekly or monthly online Live Streaming Session with brides to be, regardless of whether or not they are my clients.  I've been seeing the world open up so much with the Live Streaming that I've started doing with photographers, that I think it might be really helpful to brides who simply need some guidance from someone who has seen and participated in literally hundreds of weddings.

I'd like your feedback!  Let me know your thoughts...and if you are a prospective bride, let me know if this is something that would interest you.

Thanks!

The Dark Knight Black Belt- having fun in Photoshop!

This is a fun shot that I did that is NOT for commercial use.  My sensei is a huge fan of Batman, so I took my shot of his Chuck Norris kick that we did in the Dojo, and then found a non-commercial Batman poster and did some graphic art magic to put him on here.  I then found a Batman mask that they sell at costume stores and put it on his face.  Once in a while it's fun to see and challenge ourselves a little bit with Photoshop, and this was done strictly for that purpose.  Hope you like it!
