I'll carry you

There is so much that we do for our children, and our children give us so much back. But there are times where a parent is given something back that they'll never forget. Kara and I took our boys to Disneyland for an all day event. I'm traveling quite a bit now so we make sure to do a lot of fun things as a family to make sure to stay connected. We stayed in the Disney hotel the night before which was a blast. We got up the next morning and got into the park by 7am. We were there until midnight. It was a blast and as a family it was a day we'll never forget.

As we were leaving the boys just couldn't walk...they were too tired. We couldn't take a shuttle because we were parked at the hotel so we had to walk. Carrying all of our stuff plus three 5-year olds wasn't possible...but we couldn't tell that to the boys. I picked up two of them (Michael and Kevin) in my arms and walked as far as we could. Kara helped JJ. I left the boys and Kara at downtown Disney (about 1/2 mile from the parking lot). They all fell onto the grass and waited for me....except for my son Kevin. Kevin asked to come with me. After taking 5 steps he asked me to pick him up and I did. While walking Kevin had his head nuzzled in my neck. He then said to me, "I love you Daddy. Someday when I get bigger and you get smaller......I'll carry you." It was at that moment I realized how much our children understand the spirit of service...and how they learn by example. I now look forward to the day where my sons will be able to say...."It's okay Daddy I'll carry you."

East Maui Bridals

Below are pictures from a bridal portrait session with Ashley on the East Side of Maui. It was taken during a beautiful sunset....and lucky thing that the water was warm because it made it easier for her to get a little wet! I just can't get enough of Maui....it's such a beautiful island....so diverse with so many different settings to choose from.

The bridal shoot was so much fun...but a little funny as well. I had to leave to the airport straight from the shoot so I had my slacks and dress shoes on. I didn't expect to get into the water but the shots were just too good. After the shoot I had to find my shoes but couldn't because it was so dark. By the time I found them I took off to the airport and literally ran to the plane. I boarded just as they were closing the gate...and got some hilarious looks from the other passengers as my shoes sloshed through the aisles...and my slacks were wet all the way up. I love Hawaii and can't wait to get back!

Huntington Beach Engagement

I had a great time this week doing an engagement shoot with Molly and bill at the Huntington Beach Pier. The wind was blowing really hard but we got some great shots. Shoots end up being great not because of the photographer's skill alone, but truly because the subjects in the pictures do such a great job. Molly and Bill have so much great chemistry together and that came through in the shots. We had a fantastic sunset and the weather was perfect. Thanks to Molly and Bill for a great shoot!

Bridals in Maui

I had the great opportunity to shoot some bridal portraits on the beach in Maui two weeks ago. Something I love about the islands is a lot of the times wedding dresses are so simple and pretty...and many times they don't even wear shoes. I shot these bridals with Erin and the shoot was fantastic. We had a wonderful full moon and shot these shots on the west side of the island. We found some trees that go right into the water on the side of the road and turned it into our location for the shoot. Using my D3 and Sony video light we went to work. I was so excited when she agreed to go into the water. It was a great shoot...and no cops!

Wasatch Ragnar

Yes, we're alive.....I think this is the longest I've gone without posting a blog but that has been because of my shooting life being the busiest in my career. I was back in Maui for a week, flew a "red eye" from Maui to LAX and within 5 hours was driving up to Utah with my team for the Utah Wasatch Ragnar Race. The race was a blast...it's very tiring because you stay up for almost 48 hours straight....but it is SO much fun. I had some incredible shoots I did in Maui with brides and models that I'll post on later...but this Ragnar race was truly a riot. We have another race in three weeks in Seattle....so no rest for us!!! Let me know what you think!

NBA Finals

I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Lakers Celtics finals game on Tuesday where my Lakers won!!! I know they lost on Thursday and things aren't looking good but I believe they will win on Sunday and then we get to see what happens in Boston. My favorite is Kobe and I'm not a recent convert to the Lakers. My brother Ryan and I used to sleep outside in the garage when Magic and the Lakers would lose a playoff game out of protest....we actually only punished ourselves but we had to do something with our angst.

I went to the game with one of my best friends Gary and we had a great time. And for all the Boston fans out there.....just wait until next year when we have Andrew Bynum back....that would be the equivalent of you guys not having one of your "Big Three" Regardless of the outcome of the Finals, I loved the game and will never forget it!

Downtown Disney

Below are pics from a recent engagement photo shoot at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA. This was such a fun shoot because you're not allowed to shoot there! We kept getting chased away by the cops and security staff...and if you look at the first three shots you will see the sign that reads, "NO photography, audio, video recording." It was a great night and the couple...Morgan and Ryan went with the flow the entire evening. Thanks for making it such a great shoot!

WPPI 2008 Print Competition

Below are some of the pics that I'm considering...as well as some from my last wedding for the WPPI 8x10 print competition. As you can tell I really love what I do....and I just love taking pictures of brides. None of the women below are models...just blushing brides and I really enjoy shooting them. I went to a seminar recently with Joe Buissink and he stated that a client told him she could tell through his photography that Joe loved women....I thought that was a great thing to say, and very telling.

Your style is defined by what you shoot, the way you shoot it, and ultimately what you love to shoot. I never worry about it when a client asks what style I shoot...photojournalistic, fashion, traditional, etc. I just tell them..I shoot my style...if you like the photos in the portfolio we're in business! Be true to your style and you will be more successful than trying to be something you're not. So go out there and shoot!

Stealing Cinderella

Below are shots from the wedding I shot almost two weeks ago in North Carolina. It was an absolutely beautiful wedding. This was the culmination of a year long process...shooting the engagement in October, the bridals in February, and the wedding in May. Randy and Jaime with their families were the absolute best, and provided so many memorable and beautiful moments that we will all remember forever. May their marriage be blessed forever. Let me know what you think of the shots and the slideshow below!

Memorial Day from Irag

In memory of those who fight and give so much for our country....I post these pictures from a marine buddy of mine in Iraq. Despite your belief on the war or your political persuasion, these men and women deserve our gratitude for their service...and for our freedom. My brother in law Ben has also served in Irag as a helicopter pilot. Not only should we be grateful for those who serve, but also to their families who sacrifice so much for these heroes. While we all enjoy a day off to barbecue, take the family out, or just get caught up on rest...may we never forget those who risk their lives everyday for our freedom. Semper Fi.

Florida Engagement

Below are pictures from a recent engagement shoot from our bride Erin and her husband to be. They were taken in Florida where they live by one of my great photographers Leslie Roark. I always love to look at engagement shots because it tells you so much about the couple, and in looking at these shots I can truly tell they love each other. The wedding is in September right on the ocean and it's sure to be a complete blast!

Boys Day Out- The Perfect Day

So after spending the night at the Queen Mary (see previous post) we woke up in the morning, went downstairs through this beautiful lobby and had breakfast in the restaurant. The funniest picture I took was of my son Michael eating French Toast, and although he had a fork in his hand he decided to use the toothpick from his fruit to eat it...

We went back to the room and grabbed a quick shot together for memory sake...I'm trying to get into more pictures and not just be the one taking them....

Before leaving the ship we started the Ghosts and Legends tour on the ship. The boys got scared and hid under my shirt...so we left the tour after only 5 minutes. The funniest thing was after we left the boys started saying.."I wasn't scared I was only shy...."
We took off to the Aquarium of the Pacific where the boys had the time of their lives.

We saw jellyfish....

Pet the sharks....

Bought stuffed animals...

And the boys grabbed my camera and started taking pictures of me!!! This was probably their favorite thing of the day...

They hid in caverns....

And got up and close to the fish...

Tried to get inside the tanks...

And just sat in wonder.....

We left the aquarium and went to see IRONMAN!!!! The boys were pretty excited...

The boys enjoyed popcorn, milk duds, and licorice....with some fruit punch...
We left the theater and headed home.......
I called Kara and asked how she was doing. She said she could use a nap so I kept the boys for a little while longer.....they fell asleep on the drive home....
I decided to take them to another movie.....we decided to see Speed Racer.
The movie was fantastic and the boys were literally standing on the seats screaming during the race scenes...it was hilarious and the kind of movie where letting the boys make noise during the race scenes was just fine....
We left the theater at 11pm at night....Kara called and wondered when her boys were coming home. It was the most memorable day of my life with my boys and I made sure to document it carefully so we could remember forever. Definitely a day that I will repeat in the future....you can never have too many perfect days................

Queen Mary Vacation with the boys

In my last post I said we were going to go camping with my boys. Unfortunately the campsites were all full...so I HAD to take my boys somewhere to not let them down. We decided to take a trip to the famous Queen Mary...a cruise ship turned hotel that was famous for the people it serviced and for it's role in World War 2.

So we checked into the hotel with our room on B-Deck...the ship is docked but still sitting in the ocean...and the boys were so excited. I snapped a quick shot of our view out of our two portholes and of some things in the room and then we took off to tour the ship. We walked down the hallway and onto the top deck. We met a group of seniors that asked us to take their picture so I did....after doing so J.J. (Jason Jr.) said, "They're walking strange..are they okay?" They had obviously had too much to drink.

The boys were just enamored with the ship. They couldn't get enough of it...looking over the sides, running on the deck...it was more than they could handle. They had so many questions....and it was so fun for me to try and answer all of them. The hardest question to answer was why the ship wasn't moving...I told them it was just moving very slowly so we wouldn't fall while we were walking...they seemed pretty skeptical of my answer.

One of the funnest things for me was when they started posing right a hip hop group...these were completely unposed and I had a hard time taking the pictures because I was laughing so hard. You can tell they've grown up in front of the camera.

We toured the ship as much as possible before it got too cold and then we went back to the room. My boys being used to room service (thanks to their Mom) immediately found the room service menu and asked for dessert. What kind of Dad could say, "No," to that? I ordered three strawberry shakes with chocolate syrup and a banana split. We all cuddled up in our King size bed and fell asleep to cartoons. It was a wonderful end to a fantastic night....just wait until you see what we did the next day......

Father-Son Time

My Dad was one of the smartest men I've ever known....I know, I know...a lot of people would say that. But he had multiple Master's Degrees and on top of that he seemed to know every answer to the game show Jeopardy...and he wasn't watching reruns. As smart as he was...he chose a less busy life, stopped going to law school, and decided to be a fantastic Dad. He was always a great provider...but nothing came before his family. I took this anonymous picture of a Dad and his son about two years ago.

I've always loved the shot...because it shows me how important it is for a Dad to take care of the limited time he has with his children...before they're all grown up. Last weekend I missed a Father-Son camping trip for our church due to being in Hawaii. I told my sons there was nothing in the world that would keep me from making it up to them. So on Friday we are leaving Kara at home for some personal relaxation time...and my boys and I are going camping! The boys haven't stopped talking about it...and we're very excited to go. I'll make sure to get pics!!

For all of you out there...you can always make a dollar you've lost, always have another meeting, always watch another game....but you can NEVER get back a moment that you miss with your children. I'm missing the Lakers game tomorrow and I didn't even realize I was when we made our plans...but nothing could make me miss a camping trip with my boys.

Tagged

I was tagged yesterday by Rebecca Tyler, another photographer. Getting tagged means I have to answer a series of questions that let everyone know a little more about me. So here goes!

The rules-1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning. 2. Each player answers the questions about themselves. 3. At the end of the post each player the tags 5 players and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

  • What was I doing ten years ago? I was a forklift driver for a medical manufacturing parts company. That job was crazy. Between myself and the other drivers I'm surprised we're all alive. I was dating this really cute girl named Kara..and of course had no kids. I was driving the first car I ever owned (and still own) a 1989 Supercharged Toyota MR2. I sang to and danced with Kara in empty parking lots as the music in the car stereo played after we went to a cheap movie and was in the process of convincing her to marry me. Life was good.

  • 5 things on my to do list today? Get ready for meeting with Thruster on Friday, get portfolio prepared for Maggie Sotero, finalize contract with Ragnar Racing, get ready for my Father-Sons camping trip on Friday (with my three best friends in the world...my triplet boys), and wash my car!
(My boys learning to be photographers...my son Kevin using an old tripod as a pretend camera while his brothers pose for him...they all say they want to be photographers).
  • 3 bad habits?- diet coke....driving a little too fast, and getting distracted by picture moments everywhere I go.
  • 5 places I've lived? West Covina, CA- growing up years...Rancho Cucamonga,CA- junior high and high school- Korea- as a missionary, Riverside, CA- first married, Temecula, CA- where we currently live.

So now you know a little more about me....it isn't too scary is it?
