Allie's Sunrise

The pictures below are of the most humbling and important photo shoots I have ever done. My brother Kevin called me last Saturday to ask if I could come to Utah and do a photo shoot with his family before his baby girl Allie passed away. I left immediately from Phoenix where I was doing a photo shoot and drove straight to Salt Lake City. We met Sunday night at the temple in Salt Lake City where we did the photo shoot with his wife Kristen and son Isaac.

It was truly one of the neatest moments of my life being able to capture this last moment the family had to share together before Allie joined her Heavenly Father. We stayed up in Utah and on Tuesday morning I woke up early and drove to a Nature Reserve, laid in the ice and snow and captured this shot with the intention of naming the picture "Allie's Sunrise." Allie died 5 hours later in her Father's arms and I feel blessed to have been a part of her young and precious life. I will never forget her and it makes me squeeze my sons even tighter when I hug them. We never know what will happen in life so take advantage of every moment you have.

Jobyna's on Lifetime

I'm sorry it's been so long since a post. Things have been moving so fast it's hard to believe. I just did this model shoot at a beautiful bridal shop named Jobynas in Los Angeles. The pictures were taken for a spot that will be running on Lifetime TV for http://www.getmarried.com/. The shoot was so much fun and the model Katia was fantastic. I shot the entire shoot with a 50mm 1.4 with the lights off in the shop so we could bring out the natural light.

It was so much fun and I can't thank Jobynas, getmarried.com, and Lifetime TV enough for the opportunity. We are still picking the images that will be shown on TV so let us know which ones you like the most!

Joseph and Andrea

As mentioned in the previous post, we just shot a great wedding in Pensacola, Florida. I forgot to thank Micha Everett in the post for all the help she gave me....she was wonderful and I couldn't have done it without her. Check out the slideshow! The music is from a group called Rush of Fools that I discovered today....it's a really cool song. Let me know what you think!

Brides, Heroes, and Lighthouses

I just returned from a fantastic wedding in Florida last weekend. It was a total Marine wedding which was great because my brother in law is an active Marine, and I truly respect all of our military servicemen and women that keep us safe. We started off the wedding at the hotel, moved to the chapel that was on base, and then to the Reception which was on the beach at the Officer's Club at the base in Pensacola. After the Reception we went out for a shoot on the beach and then found this unbelievable Lighthouse (I love lighthouses) and had a once in a lifetime shoot.

This couple was also the winner of the Best Photographer in Los Angeles competition...where I promised to shoot a wedding for free if I was fortunate enough to win the distinction of Best Photographer in Los Angeles. The couple was excited to have me come out to the wedding, but more importantly, I was THRILLED to provide something for them, and they were such a willing couple that it made for a super fun shoot. Let me know what you think about the pics...and which ones you like the most. I put up more than usual because the bride and groom wanted to be able to see some while on their honeymoon.

"Do you know what I can do to you?"

WOW! I had such a fun and adventurous shoot with Justin and Aliya in Washington DC! It was freezing cold and raining...snowing...but they were troopers...so they decided to keep the shoot. We met under the Lincoln Memorial to try and stay warm. I arrived early and set up my gear. Multiple police officers passed me and never said a word. When Justin and Aliya arrived one officer figured I was going to take pictures of them and then decided he had some words for me.
The officer walked over to me and told to get my tripod off the floor. It wasn't even set up...but he didn't want it on the floor. I picked it up at which point he told me no photography is allowed in the Memorial. I complied and set my tripod back on the ground so I could pick up it's bag. That's when he got mad at me...

He tells me to get out of there and I complied. Before we walked down the steps to the reflection pool that you see in the pictures I wanted to know what we were allowed to do as to not get in trouble. That's when he pulled his Robert Deniro impersonation and asked me, "Do you know what I can do to you?" I responded (not sarcastically).."I have a pretty good idea."

He then asked me, "Are you trying to be smart with me? What can I do to you?" I responded, "I'm not sure, but I know I won't like it." He told me commercial photography isn't allowed inside the monuments....so I thanked him for the heads up and we left. While walking down the steps of the memorial all heck broke loose...

The steps had iced over...I had my Nikon D2XS with flash around my shoulder, my infrared (Fuji IS10) around my neck, camera bag in left hand, tripod in right hand, external turbo battery attached to the flash, and two lenses in my coat pockets....and that's when I made the steps my version of a slip and slide...

I was walking...and then I was sliding...it all happened fast. Went sliding down and really sacrificed body for gear. I slid down about 10 steps and then I hear Aliya's voice as she has now started sliding down the steps! I turn around and she's coming right for me. I put up my hand and helped her stop.

I then checked gear and nothing appeared too bad. A bystander said, "Man, that was amazing." I replied, "What, my grace as I fell down?" He said, "No, your willingness to sacrifice your body for your camera...that was amazing."

Luckily all was fine except for a crack on the view glass of my Nikon. We decided to find shelter...it was raining and turning into ice. We walked towards Washington Monument and found a beautiful structure that was dry inside and free of other people. We started the shoot there and I have to give Justin and Aliya credit...it was freezing but they took their coats and scarfs off and were wonderful models.

We finished there and got some great shots in front of the reflection pool. While walking over there we were surprised that even the dirt was iced over! Towards the end of the shoot it REALLY started to rain hard and everytime I fired the flash you would see tons of rain drops everywhere...it was really cool.

A huge thanks to Justin and Aliya for making it possible. I will never forget the shoot for as long as I live and I'll always remember what he can do to me.....!

Permit Required

All of my shoots are fun and full of adventure....but this shoot hits the top 3 in regards to the most adventurous and fun shoots ever. I met Julie and John down at Union Station for an engagement shoot. We had a fantastic time and shot everywhere. We ended up down by the subway which is where we had some fantastic shots. We were down there shooting for about 20-30 minutes and I had just shot the last couple shots of them kissing and standing in front of the yellow line when one of the Union Station Metrolink workers said to me, "I don't know why you're still here, the Sheriffs department is coming." I said, "What do you mean? Are we not supposed to shoot here?" He replied, "No, you're not, and with the whole 9-11 thing, they require a permit and wouldn't have given you one to shoot down here." I said, "If you just would have told me, I would have left." He shrugged his shoulders....then I realized...he just did tell me, and I better leave.

I quickly but quietly packed up my gear, told my second shooter Jeret to do the same, and had my other guy Chris grab my bag. There was an escalator 10 feet from us that would lead us back from where we came...to the main part of the train station. I decided to go the other direction. I didn't know what the Sheriffs Department was going to want, but I also knew I didn't want to find out....especially if they made me delete my cards....or even worse confiscated equipment.

We walked about 250 feet to an elevator and rode it up to the second level of the subway area. Everyone was doing that nervous giggle thing. We exited the elevator and about 150 feet in front of us were three sheriffs deputies walking our direction. The problem was, myself, Jeret, and Chris were all dressed in straight black.....that's the last time I require something like that. I told everyone just to be cool and keep walking. The deputies gave us a quick glance and then continued past us to where we were shooting. We continued walking until we saw a stairway that lead to the outside. We continued up the stairway and out...we made it!

Not so fast. We found ourselves in the back of the station where the Metrolink administration building is located. There's no way to walk around to the front of the station. We went into the Metrolink building to see if we could find a way to the front of the building....I go to ask a nice lady how to get out to the street and before I know it I'm in trouble again....she was filling up an ATM machine and told me I needed to speak to the police officer standing over there....so I go and speak to the police officer who asks me what we're doing in this building and why am I talking to a lady filling up an ATM machine. Trying to put on my best James Bond face I tell him we're lost and need to find the train station. He looks at me like I'm mentally slow and tells me the building is right over there.....pointing with his finger. I thank him and we leave the administration building....once again at the back of the train station.

I tell Julie and John to go ahead of us and walk through the train station. They leave us three there and we wait for about 3 minutes. We then see a street light down at the other side of the building way down there and hope that we can walk around the building instead of through it. We walk down and realize that in order for us to walk around the building we would have to walk on the side of a freeway offramp (the 101 offramp to Alameda). Well, we talk for about 1 minute about our options and then see 2 security guards walking in our direction. I then declare that it appears the decision has been made for us. So we walk down the offramp, over to Alameda...joking that this is the same offramp we took when we drove down here and then continue around to the front of the station.

Julie and John see us and come over to us and are laughing at this point. They told us they were really concerned we got stopped because when they went down into the station ahead of us, there were 3 sheriffs deputies waiting at the escalators looking for photographers! We then went over to Olvera street and continued the shoot which was fantastic. The only problem is that everyone parked in front of the station, but I was parked in back....so I sent the four of them with my camera bag over to Olvera street (which is across the street) and I went back through the station to where my car was parked...luckily making it to the car and leaving. Olvera street was great! We had them shop and mingle with the crowd. There was a kind man playing the harp for money so I paid him several dollars to play while Julie and John danced in the middle of the busy crowd. It was priceless.

Now, I have all the respect in the world for permits, laws, and police officers.....the problem is that I didn't know a permit was required and I am traveling to the East Coast tomorrow...I couldn't risk any of my gear being taken even for a day or two. I know it sounds crazy, but I have four others who know this story is true...Jason Lanier Photography...it's not a shoot, it's an adventure.

Going Back East

I'm getting ready for a week long trip to the East Coast for a great week of shooting. I'll be starting off in Washington DC for an engagement shoot and then will continue on to New York and Boston. On Friday I'll be flying down to Florida to shoot a great wedding in Pensacola Beach. It will be a blast and I'm really looking forward to it. If anyone is in the area and wants to shoot with me at any of the locations let me know...I always love hooking up with other photographers. I'll also make sure to post some shots on the blog as I go. I'm not looking forward to being without my three little boys and wife....but luckily I'll only be gone a week. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun!

Dustin and Claudia

I had a great engagement shoot yesterday with Dustin and Claudia at Laguna Beach, CA. It was a ton of fun, and they are such a wonderful couple. The funnest part was getting wet. I ended up in the water, and that lead to the couple willing to get wet which resulted in some of my favorite shots from the shoot. With everyone getting engaged recently we have a lot of engagement shoots coming up, as well as two weddings in two weeks, one in California and the other in Florida. Lots of good stuff going on and we're having fun!!!

Taking a break

I've been working so much lately and I became sick because of it. While taking some time off from the constant workflow, my sons begged me to turn on "dancing music" for them. My boys love to dance, and have a very natural talent for it. Kevin is my lead dancer as you can tell by the boy who's usually in the front of the pics. Jason Jr. is my singer and does this hilarious rock star impersonation without knowing what he's doing, and Michael is so full of energy that he keeps his brothers laughing by running all over the room. We love to dance with the boys, but we have seriously not trained them to dance in any way...they just are happy boys with a knack to dance. Watching them and realizing how neat it is to be young and full of life and not worrying about deadlines made me realize that we all sometimes really do need to take a break. Life's too short to let it go by too fast...especially if you miss something as important as watching your three sons dance...

We have also touched up some of the websites which has been fun as well as a lot of hard work. I will put a quick blog post on all the companies individually over the next month...to explain a little bit more. We're having fun...and I appreciate all the support as we continue to grow our business. Check out JLPROS.com for more information!

Cahoon Wedding

We held off on showing the slideshows for this wedding because there was a second reception up in Utah that we just finished yesterday. We showed the slideshows and the video our Lanier Cinematics team put together which was AWESOME! Thanks to my main guy Cameron for staying up until 5am the night before to finish it in time. There are two slideshows because the wedding was so big...and also because Karly is part of the Lanier Photography Family. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Jacob's Field

We just returned last week from an amazing wedding in Cleveland, OH. Leslie and I went out and shot this amazing couple named Matt and Jenna Sekerak. We had a two day shoot with the first day taking two locations....Squires Castle and Jacob's Field where the Cleveland Indians play. It was such an awesome feeling to be there in the middle of the stadium on the pitchers mound!! We got to be on the field for over two hours which was phenomenal. Me being from California I must have fallen at least three times....the worst of which was in the Indians clubhouse. The stadium representative were SO accommodating....it made the shoot fantastic. We had the ceremony and the reception in the Terrace Club at the stadium on Saturday and it was beautiful. The couple were especially great and the bride was SUCH a trooper in participating in so many shoots with a strapless dress! It was one of the funnest shoots I've done all year. This was also the first wedding I used the infrared camera on which was really cool. The results with the camera are outstanding. Can you tell which ones are infrared? Please check out the slideshow below!!

Christmas at Disneyland

Nothing is better than having kids during Christmas....and despite the fact that my three boys received a TON of presents from Santa, grandma and grandpa, and others....their final present from Mom and Dad was annual passes to Disneyland. Below are some pictures of us with the kids at Disneyland. My favorite shot is when I'm holding my son Kevin during the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He loved the ride but every time we went down a small water shoot he would cover his eyes. After the ride all three boys kept begging to go back. It was a great time...but it was also pretty cold for California! Needless to say we will be heading back to D-land many more times this year.

Squires Castle

For those of you who haven't seen or photographed the Squires Castle in Willoughby Hills, OH, you need to go. These pictures are taken of Leslie Roark, one of my photographers who never had Bridal Portraits taken.....so we did it in Ohio while out here for a shoot. I came to the castle earlier in the day with the bride and groom and can back here at night with Leslie. I can't post any pictures of the bride and groom until all their pictures are ready....but they turned out great as well. The most rewarding part about the shoot is we were trying to use a Qflash to provide the lighting but couldn't get it to work.....so all of the light is provided by my trusty Nikon SB8oo normal external flash. We were really excited when we saw these...so we decided to post them right away. Let me know what you think!!!!!!!

Infrared

Always looking to try something different and to venture into a new realm of photography, I took the plunge and bought an infrared camera. I didn't do the whole conversion route of taking a standard digital and having it converted...I bought a Fujifilm IS-1 which is a great camera. I have tried to purchase the IS PRO but it is very hard to come by and you have to be affiliated with law enforcement to get one. These cameras are meant for forensic work, but have started to become popular for those photographers looking for a different look. I snapped these two shots yesterday literally while driving around. The first one I took through my windshield while sitting in traffic (very common for California), and the second one I took at a park. It may look like a winter wonderland but it's actually green trees and grass....pretty cool. I'm going to start using it slowly with weddings and other ventures (on a limited basis), but if you get it right it can provide some stunning effects. Let me know what you think!

We did a shoot in a mansion and she did a fantastic job with helping the way the photos turned out. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Beautiful Smile

Hey All! Check out this Bridal shoot I did with this amazing bride named Connie. She isn't a model...but she sure looks like one.

We went down to San Diego a week before the wedding and did this shoot where she was such a trooper. It was getting a little cold towards the end of the night and being down at the beach...the breeze was coming in. Well, I kept offering to call it a day but she kept saying, "No, let's keep going...let's get these shots." We kept going and it paid off with a great shoot. When we got back into the car I turned on the heater and she kept it going for about 30 minutes full blast....

I kept apologizing and she kept laughing saying it was worth it for the shots. I hope you all think it was worth it as well. Take a look and let me know what you think!

Thanks,

J
